The Importance of Serving

Standard

As the New Year approaches, I urge you to consider trying to get involved in serving others more often. There are many reasons why a person should serve. You might think that serving is for the person that you are helping, but it’s so much more than that. It truly changes you and helps you grow on your walk with Christ. Here are the top three reasons why I think you should serve.

  1. It gives you a sense of commitment to something. When you’re waking up early to do something at first you might not want to wake up, but when you realize that the people you are serving with need you then it gets easier.
  2. You can see the difference you are making. There is nothing better than the feeling of realizing that what you are doing is making a difference. You can realize this when you see the smile on the child’s face or when you notice that you completed what could have seemed like a tough task.
  3. God commands us to love our neighbor, and serving is one way we can love our neighbor. I cannot say enough that it really impacts the people you are serving that you come to help them with a need. Once you get into the swing of serving, then you start to be missed when you are not serving.

Now that you know the reasons of why to serve, then I hope your mind is wondering how you can get involved in serving. There are also many ways to serve. So I’m going to list a few ways you can serve others. I would strive to serve at least once a month, but there is no limit on how frequently you serve.  I serve with the middle-schoolers at my church every week.

  • You can get involved with a non-profit. There are many non-profits throughout the country and globally that you can be a part of. Figure out what you might want to do or some gifts that you have been given, and then research on the Internet for non-profits that you can use those gifts with. Or you can look up non-profits in your local area or where you want to get involved, and see if any interest you.
  • Volunteer at a Local Senior Citizen home. There can be a lot of depression in a Senior Citizen community, and you can go and be a light to them. You can help them by doing a craft with them or singing to them.
  • You can make your own serve events. If you find a need in your city or globally then you can be the initiative that starts it. An example of this is that I knew a family that was going overseas. I decided that a group of kids I watch and I could make bracelets for the kids they would be coming in contact with.
  • You can volunteer with a program that helps with the homeless community. In most cities there are programs that’s help feed or support the local homeless community, and if you can’t find any in your area than you can make one! For my birthday one year we collected scarfs and jackets and left them in areas that we knew the homeless would visit or live at.
  • You can get involved with a local church. There are many places you can serve in the church, and there is always a need of more volunteers at church. You can help with production, children, worship, hospitality, or in the offices doing things.

Whatever you do to volunteer is going to beneficial to you and others. This is just a starting list, and I hope it sparks an interest to where you can serve in the future.

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace” ~1 Peter 4:10

“The second is this: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.” ~Mark 12:31

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” ~Acts 20:35

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. “ ~Matthew 5:14-16

Things to Remember this Holiday Season

Standard

There are two major groups of people during the holiday season. The first group is the group that love the holidays. The other and lesser known group is the people that think the holidays can be a disappointing or sad time of the year.

For the first group holidays are a great time of the year. It is a time filled with seeing family and friends. Many times you have multiple Christmas parties to go to during the season. You have many gifts to buy and give and/or you are getting many gifts. You have vacations to go on and people to visit. For students you get a break off from school, and for many you go to your hometown to see the people you care about. This is the life of many people during the holidays.

BUT for the second group the holidays are not a happy time. For these people the holidays can be a sad and disappointing. And there is many reasons why the holidays can be like this, and everyone’s reasons are different. But for a few it a reminder of the loved ones you lost. Or it’s a time of battles with family members about the things of the past. Or you have no one to spend the holidays with in general. And during this time it doesn’t help to get on social media and see all the great things that are happening to everyone else.

For the first group of people remember:

  • Enjoy these times you have with friends and loved ones. It might not be like this forever. Don’t take these precious moments for granted. These seasons are a gift that should be cherished.
  • If you know someone that could be in the second group. Reach out to them, and try to include them the best you can. Treat this person as you would want be treated if you were them.

For the second group of people remember:

  • Have hope during this time that holidays will get better, and that it may only be like this for a few years. Remember that you’re not alone. There are many people that feel this way, and it could even include those people that look like they are having a blast this holiday season.
  • And if you don’t think things will get any better than try to make the situation better. Reach out to others for help during the holidays. You don’t have to be alone and sad during these times. Make the best out of the situation you have been given.

Though regardless of the group you are in there are some things you both can remember about the holidays. Remember the real reason of why we have the holidays. The real reason we have the holidays is to remember the birth of a little boy, named Jesus, who came to save the world. He came to give us the best gift we could ask for. He came so that we could have eternal life. If you don’t know if you have this gift, then let me assure you that it is given to whomever wants it. As long as you believe that this little boy came for you and me to save us from our sins then you can have eternal life. I pray that you have this gift, and if you don’t then you receive it this holiday season.

Scripture References:

“She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” ~ Matthew 1:21

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.” ~John 3:16

“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope” ~Romans 15:13

“He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds” ~Psalms 147:3
