The Importance of Serving

Standard

As the New Year approaches, I urge you to consider trying to get involved in serving others more often. There are many reasons why a person should serve. You might think that serving is for the person that you are helping, but it’s so much more than that. It truly changes you and helps you grow on your walk with Christ. Here are the top three reasons why I think you should serve.

  1. It gives you a sense of commitment to something. When you’re waking up early to do something at first you might not want to wake up, but when you realize that the people you are serving with need you then it gets easier.
  2. You can see the difference you are making. There is nothing better than the feeling of realizing that what you are doing is making a difference. You can realize this when you see the smile on the child’s face or when you notice that you completed what could have seemed like a tough task.
  3. God commands us to love our neighbor, and serving is one way we can love our neighbor. I cannot say enough that it really impacts the people you are serving that you come to help them with a need. Once you get into the swing of serving, then you start to be missed when you are not serving.

Now that you know the reasons of why to serve, then I hope your mind is wondering how you can get involved in serving. There are also many ways to serve. So I’m going to list a few ways you can serve others. I would strive to serve at least once a month, but there is no limit on how frequently you serve.  I serve with the middle-schoolers at my church every week.

  • You can get involved with a non-profit. There are many non-profits throughout the country and globally that you can be a part of. Figure out what you might want to do or some gifts that you have been given, and then research on the Internet for non-profits that you can use those gifts with. Or you can look up non-profits in your local area or where you want to get involved, and see if any interest you.
  • Volunteer at a Local Senior Citizen home. There can be a lot of depression in a Senior Citizen community, and you can go and be a light to them. You can help them by doing a craft with them or singing to them.
  • You can make your own serve events. If you find a need in your city or globally then you can be the initiative that starts it. An example of this is that I knew a family that was going overseas. I decided that a group of kids I watch and I could make bracelets for the kids they would be coming in contact with.
  • You can volunteer with a program that helps with the homeless community. In most cities there are programs that’s help feed or support the local homeless community, and if you can’t find any in your area than you can make one! For my birthday one year we collected scarfs and jackets and left them in areas that we knew the homeless would visit or live at.
  • You can get involved with a local church. There are many places you can serve in the church, and there is always a need of more volunteers at church. You can help with production, children, worship, hospitality, or in the offices doing things.

Whatever you do to volunteer is going to beneficial to you and others. This is just a starting list, and I hope it sparks an interest to where you can serve in the future.

“In all things I have shown you that by working hard in this way we must help the weak and remember the words of the Lord Jesus, how he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’” ~Acts 20:35

“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden; nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. “Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven. “ ~Matthew 5:14-16
